Why Mediation?
Mediation is a flexible and affordable process to help you and the other party resolve problems. You have more control over the outcome!
What can mediation do?
~Help divorcing couples negotiate property settlements or devise a parenting plan in an affordable and fast process.
~Help individuals with a legal dispute (insurance claim, lease violation, employment issues, etc) settle that dispute and avoid expensive court costs and attorney fees.
~Help people plan together for major life commitments like marriage or writing a will or entering a long-term contract for care.
Our mediations are online, or in person.
We listen to the issue and propose a process that will work for both parties

Choosing the Right Path for Your Divorce or Parenting Plan.
Navigating a divorce or creating a parenting plan can feel overwhelming. The best approach depends on your specific situation and how much agreement there is between both parties. If you and the other party are mostly or partially in agreement, your path to resolution may be smoother than if you have very different goals. The best path forward in WA from the three options below will depend on your family law situation and the experiences of the parties involved.
1. DIY Divorce (Do-It-Yourself)
If both parties are largely in agreement, you can complete the divorce process yourselves using the Spokane County divorce packet. This includes:
Petition for Dissolution
Parenting Plan
Child Support Worksheet
Simply fill out the forms, sign them together, and file them at the courthouse. This is the simplest and most cost-effective option, and can lead to a quick and peaceful resolution without involving a lawyer, mediator, or court trial.
2. DIY with a Little Help: Mediation
If you’re not fully in agreement but are willing to work together in person or viaZoom, mediation can help. Start by agreeing on a mediator. Syringa’s mediation services in Spokane can guide you through your divorce and support you in reaching an agreement on:
• Divorce terms
• Parenting plans
• Move-out plans
• Financial separation
• Parenting Plan and Child Support
•Pet Custody
• Any areas of disagreement or disputes
Mediation is flexible—you can choose to work through the entire process or focus only on unresolved issues. It’s usually faster and less expensive than hiring an attorney, and once an agreement is reached, you can complete and file the required information and forms [here].
One of the biggest benefits of working with Syringa mediators in Spokane is the opportunity to create a mutual resolution tailored to your family, rather than relying on a judge. We also work with parties outside of the Spokane area throughout Washington State.
Note: While we are not attorneys, Syringa Mediation mediators are experts in helping parties communicate and reach workable, peaceful agreements. Mediation can often achieve the same legal outcome as litigation, without the added time, cost, or conflict.
3. Full Assistance: Hire an Attorney
If an agreement can’t be reached—even with mediation—it may be time to hire an attorney. In more complex family law cases or when disputes are significant, legal representation may be necessary. An attorney acts as an advocate for each party and can either negotiate on your behalf or argue your case in front of a judge. This route may be required for cases involving:
• Division of property, assets, and debts
• Child custody and parenting arrangements
• Contested legal matters in Spokane and throughout WA
• When choosing this option, the attorney for each party will:
• Represent each party individually
• Advocate during negotiations or litigation
• Help navigate the WA state legal process
This route can take longer—typically up to a year if it goes to trial—and may result in a higher financial and emotional cost. Still, it may be the best path for achieving expert case resolution in certain situations.
